The chest of drawers is a French piece of furniture dating from the 18th century and can be attributed to the Louis XV style. It is made of solid walnut and features a slightly bombé front, curved cabriole legs, and richly executed, deeply carved wood ornament. The original gilt-bronze mounts are finely worked and harmoniously integrated into the overall design.
The emphasis on carved solid wood, together with the choice of material and stylistic characteristics, suggests production in a French provincial workshop. In contrast to contemporary Parisian furniture, the use of veneers and dominant gilt-bronze mounts is reduced in favour of a more pronounced expression of craftsmanship in the carved wood. Stylistic parallels point in particular to southwestern France as a possible place of origin, while other prosperous provincial regions may also be considered.
The chest of drawers represents a high-quality example of 18th-century French Rococo furniture and belongs to a group of comparable, unsigned provincial works preserved in regional collections and museum holdings.
